Searching for the best product photographers near me: Easy search strategies that deliver results
Most photography businesses, whether they’re operated by freelancers or are private companies employing teams of professionals, list their services online. And often, if your business is like mine, that require the services of a great photographer, you too will jump online and look for one. But how you go about finding the right one might determine if you’ve located one that’s a good fit with your business.
I’ll share a few tips in this post on how I conduct my online search when I want to find a professional product photographer near me.
Web Search Success Strategies
When I search for a product image photographer near me, I look for several criteria before reaching out to a prospect. I check out their portfolios online, ask if they are insured, assess what their credentials are, and find out what clients are saying about them. All that, I do online first, as part of my pre-interview due diligence process.
Of course, if I have a list of 100,000,000 photographers to go through, you can imagine how long that will take me to complete! I’ve found that using certain web search strategies helps reduce the number of candidates I have to perform diligence on. If I want them to deliver me RAW images, I’ll search for product photography raw photographer near me — which, hopefully offers me a list of professional product photographers that share their RAW photos (some won’t!).
Here are some questions that I typically find myself asking, about the photographers I want to look for; and my methodology for how I find exactly what I want.
1. I’m looking for great photographers to support me. How do I find them?
Companies often run publicity campaigns, be they online or using conventional print media to get their message out to the masses. The better, and more successful, marketing campaigns are those that use plenty of images and photographs. When I want to highlight a product or service, I typically do my own imaging, but at times, especially when I’m inundated with my own client requests, I’ll reach out for the expertise of a product photographer near me.
The way I look at it: If I can find a reliable and talented photographer to support my business, then why spend time and effort photographing my products and service offerings myself. It’s more efficient — and certainly more cost effective, to work with a partner — be they a freelancer or another photography company. So long as they offer value for money, it makes good business sense!
But, as a business owner looking to hire a photographer to help you with an advertisement or marketing campaign, you’d typically not start your search by asking the question: Is there a product photographer near me in the USA that can help me?
Sure, you’ll get plenty of recommendations from Google if you ask your browser that query. In fact, as the screen shot above demonstrates, you’re likely to get 200-million plus hits. That’s intimidating to process, isn’t it? So, clearly that isn’t a great strategy, by any measure, to go about photographer-hunting. Modifying your query, just a bit, and ask whom to consider if I’d like to hire a product photographer near me, then your result set might look starkly (dramatically, in fact!) less intimidating.
You see, Google’s search engine algorithms like you to be as specific as you can get. Because your “USA” query was exceptionally broad in scope, your search resulted in a broader set of results than your “near me” query. As a business owner myself, who frequently works with photographers, I prefer working with the best product photographers near me. However, I don’t have the time or the inclination to vet millions of Google listings before selecting my photography partners. That’s why, I often find it helps to have a better strategy than having too many prospective candidates on my list.
2. I’m looking for photographers specializing in my online marketing space. What’s your best advice on locating them?
Sometimes, your business might operate in a very specific niche, and you need a photographer that understands the rules of your game. The photographer you hire might literally determine the fortunes of your company. How’s that? Well, if I mostly market products online, for instance, and I do a search for a product photograph expert near me. It’s likely that, once again, I’ll end up with a large list of prospective photographers — which is fine!
By the time I interview and process the first ten or twenty names on that list, I’ll begin to realize that none of them works in my niche. They’re all excellent photographers — for weddings and nature photography. But, because I list my products on (say) Amazon, their expertise doesn’t match my business model. It might be a better strategy for me to look for an Amazon product photographer near me. That’ll ensure that, at least, the photographers I consider to work with know what Amazon looks for when building my product catalogue on my Amazon Store.
Each online marketing platform has unique requirements for images and photographs posted on their site. For instance, when selling eBooks on Kindle, images must be 300 pixels, and the platform doesn’t support TIFF, multi-frame GIFs, or image that have transparency. If your photographer isn’t familiar with the photography requirements of your niche, you’ll never succeed in marketing your business.
The same rules apply for other online selling platforms and social marketing platforms. If my marketing niche is on Instagram, then I should be looking for Instagram product photographers for hire near me — not someone that’s a Kindle eBook expert. Of course, one could argue that, since Amazon is a (somewhat) parallel marketing niche to Instagram, those (Amazon product photography) skills are transferrable. So, that’s yet another factor to consider when evaluating a photographer before you hire them.
3. I’m looking for photographers that I can afford? How do I search for one that isn’t too expensive?
That’s yet another important factor for me to consider — my budget. When looking for product photographers for hire near me, I’ll often make price a secondary factor in my searches. Why? Because I am a firm believer in the adage “You get what you pay for!”. I’ll typically screen for specifics first, like whether they have experience in my niche.
Having said that, however, it’s not like I’ll hire them first and then, once they’ve started working with me, I’ll discuss price. Of course, I want to look for cheap product photographers near me. But price only factors into my equation once I’ve established that this is the talent I want on my team.
When evaluating price and affordability, I’ll always consult my budget first. Sometimes, when I have excess work on my plate that requires a team (rather than an individual) of specialists, I’ll specifically use an established photography company nearby. For the most part, however, I find that if search for freelance product photographers near me, I often find the right talent and skill sets that I need. I’ve found using freelancers a great way to augment my own team when I have short-term projects that run for a longer-duration. But for high-intensity, one-off type assignments, a cheap photography firm is always my go-to.
4. I prefer working with businesses close to where I am. What’s the best way to find a photographer in proximity to my business?
When you have a batch of new items come into your store for the first time, it’s important to have them photographed and processed so you can get them up into your online storefront directory on Amazon, Shopify or Instagram ASAP. I find that searching online for professional product photographers near me, is often the best way to expedite product listings. With the photographer in proximity to my business, it’s easier to schedule a photography session with limited lead time — just pick up the phone as soon as a shipment arrives and have them get to work!
Googling for “local product photographers near me” may be the best way to start locating nearby photography partners. Depending upon where you are located, you’ll receive listings of professional photographers located nearby your establishment. This strategy also helps when evaluating featured listings, because you’ll have the advantage of picking and choosing photographers with high (five) star-ratings first.
And, if you wish to get even more specific, especially if you like to patronize and work with businesses in your backyard (neighborhood), you can further refine your search criteria. As we’ve said before, search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing are great at serving up highly personalized search results — the more specific you make your query, the more personalized the results.
For instance, adding a zip code into the parameters of the search, such as “product photographer near me 92881” narrows the list of prospective photo companies and freelance photographers to choose from. By including a zip code, you’ve now limited the photographer’s list to a handful, have the advantage of comparing ratings and reviews, and can do a one-click effort to go to their website or check for directions. In a bind, it helps to learn whose open and which ones are opening shortly.
