University of Nevada, Reno Earns Prestigious ‘Innovation and Economic Prosperity’ Designation from APLU
The University of Nevada, Reno has once again proven itself a pillar of progress and innovation in the Silver State. On April 2, 2025, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) officially recognized the University as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity (IEP) Designee, a highly respected national designation that underscores the University’s commitment to economic development, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
This recognition places the University of Nevada, Reno among an elite group of just over 80 institutions across North America who have earned this distinction since the program’s inception in 2013.
Strengthening Nevada’s Future
The IEP designation isn’t just a title — it’s a reflection of years of strategic planning, collaboration, and measurable impact. From partnerships with the Governor’s Office and local industries to fostering inclusive innovation and advancing workforce development, the University continues to play a vital role in enhancing the economic landscape and overall quality of life in Nevada.
University President Brian Sandoval described the designation as a reflection of the University’s “long-term and proudly held commitment to tangibly enhance Nevada’s economy and significantly improve the quality of life for all Nevadans.”
This honor followed a rigorous evaluation process, including a self-study with input from internal stakeholders and external partners, reviewed by a panel of peers. Key areas of institutional strength emerged, such as:

- Robust & Inclusive Innovation Ecosystem
- Strategic Economic Development Partnerships
Just as importantly, the University used the process to identify future growth opportunities like expanding industry engagement, enhancing entrepreneurial support, and developing talent across educational levels.
